Bonjour! In August, Dylan and I embarked on a new adventure in the stunning Pays Basque. Biarritz, with its breathtaking views and vibrant surf culture, has quickly won our hearts. Moving here from Kansas has been such an eye-opener!
Exploring Biarritz, we've discovered some incredible spots, each with its own unique charm. Here are some of our favorites:
Port Vieux Beach
Once bustling with fishermen, Port Vieux Beach is now a serene retreat. Its natural bowl shape, surrounded by cliffs, makes it perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. Historically tied to Biarritz's whaling industry, today it’s ideal for soaking up the sun and enjoying a swim.
Villa Belza
Perched dramatically on a cliff, Villa Belza boasts a mysterious, Gothic charm. Built in 1880, it has housed famous residents, including a Russian prince, and even served as a casino. Its rich history and stunning views make it a must-see in Biarritz.
Côte des Basques
Known as the birthplace of French surfing, Côte des Basques is perfect for surf enthusiasts. In the late 1950s, screenwriter Peter Viertel brought surfing to Biarritz with a board from California, igniting the town’s surf culture.
Grande Plage & Hôtel du Palais
Grande Plage is Biarritz's main beach, renowned for its wide stretch of sand and central location. Adjacent to it is the grand Hôtel du Palais, originally Napoleon III’s summer home. The hotel has hosted many famous guests, including European royalty, Ernest Hemingway, and Coco Chanel.
Rocher de la Vierge
The Rocher de la Vierge, featuring its iconic Virgin Mary statue, started as a navigational aid for fishermen and is now a beloved tourist attraction. Installed in the 1860s and linked by a bridge designed by Eiffel, this spot offers stunning coastal views.
For those seeking a destination rich in history, beauty, and charm, Biarritz is as good as it gets.
